Research interest
- Stock assessment
- Fisheries management
- Fish population ecology
- Spatial and temporal dynamics of fish populations
- Historical data
- Ecophysiology of migratory birds
My primary interest are in the field of marine fisheries stock assessment and management, as well as international cooperation in the fisheries ecology sector. I have more than 15 years of professional experience in the field of fisheries biology and ecology and more than 10 years of professional experience in the field of management of fisheries at national regional and global levels.
In particular, my main acitivities include stock assessment of the most important stocks of both the North Sea, Baltic Sea and Black Sea, statistical analysis, modelling, data managing and otolith science. I have also extensive experience within the fisheries ecology sector in Asia and in Africa under different SIDA projects.
I am currently a nominated member of ACOM (under ICES) and STECF (under DG-MARE at EU commission) committees for fisheries and marine resource management since 2002.
Current research (includes projects)
Waking the Deads - modeling long term temporal and spatial variations of historically targeted species from the eastern North Sea and the Baltic Sea using long time-series data
Flexibility and constraintsin animal movement patterns: ecology, evolution and annual cycles - study of (1) coarse-scale patterns in passerine migration, (2) variable strategies and movement trajectories of large gulls, (3) ecological and evolutionary control of movement decisions in competing generalist passerines, (4) causes and consequences of individual movement decisions in a specialist species
Small Island project -long term monitoring of migratory populations of transharian small passerines
Participation in advisory processes
I have participated in more than 40 different working groups under ICES and more than 20 working groups under EU-DG MARE. I have been nominated chairman of more than 10 different working groups under both ICES and EU-DG MARE umbrella, particularly SGMED, which is the Group responsible since 2008 for stock assessment of Mediterranean fisheries resources. Since December is member also of the of the Lake Victoria research Initiative (VICRES) Scientific Advisory Committee (VICSAC).
Academic activites and publications
I have more than 60 publications on international journals, including books, on numerous aspects of fisheries ecology as stock assessment, modelling and analysis of historical data. I have also produced several working reports for ICES and EU-DG MARE, presented more than 30 lectures and has more than 100 hours of academic activity in different universities. I have has been recently nominated official member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal Applied Ichthyology and Journal ISRN Oceanography.
