Carbon dynamics in agricultural subsoils
The objectives of this thesis work are to investigate, describe and explain SOC (Soil Organic Carbon) dynamics in the whole arable soil profile. I will determine the age of the carbon pools at different soil depths (based C isotope distribution), and these data will be related to biological and chemical soil properties, preferably those investigated in other projects at the Department (specific respiration rates, resistant carbon analysis etc.).Also, studies of microbial activity and high-level taxonomy will be made using standard methodology – particularly vertical distribution in search of explanations for the usually low activity below topsoil. If interesting results are found regarding taxonomic composition we will seek collaboration with other groups working with molecular techniques. The results will be used to improve parameterisation of carbon balance models, such as ICBM.
