Werner Mbongo
Research Assistant
I have a first degree in Forestry from Ogongo Agricultural College in association with the University of Namibia (1998-2001) and a master's degree in Forest Ecology and Management from Freiburg University, Germany (2006-2008).
In my MSc. thesis project, I studied “Institutional arrangements and coordination mechanisms to implement natural resource management strategies in Namibia”.
Most of my previous work is concerned with natural resources management in Namibia where I worked for the Directorate of Forestry (2001-2006) and for Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), (2007 - 2010).
My tasks included:
- Establishment of Community Forests, woodlots and fruit tree orchards
- Establishment of cross-sectoral river basin management committees within the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) framework
- Socio-economic and natural resources assessment surveys
- Preparation of course materials and presentation of training courses (Sustainable development and environmentally-sound decision making; Strategic environmental assessment for land use planning, and Constructive negotiation in environmental issues) to natural resources and land-use management practitioners and institutions.
In Sweden, I did an internship at Skogsstyrelsen in Höör and Hässleholm in 2010, participated in various projects and activities such as broad leave forest management; forest’s social and cultural values’ program; forest advice and state-support for harvesting applications; key habitat program.
I am at Institutionen för sydsvensk skogsvetenskap, Alnarp, since January 2011, and have been involved in several research activities and field work e.g. with Snogeholm landscape laboratory; selection and marking of trees for different thinning intensities in birch stands; data collection and registration of larch seedlings’ growth development.
I have also been conducting a literature review on the effects of timber markets of increased carbon sequestration in forests with reference to REDD.
Currently, I am working on the Swedish National Forest Inventory data to up-date a matrix growth model for the Swedish forest.
I am interested, among others, in:
- Integrated natural resources management
- Forest establishment and growth development
- Biodiversity and Sustainable land management
- Forest landscape management and land use change
- Natural resources management institutions and policy issues
- Stakeholders’ participation in natural resources management
