Vattenbrukscentrum Norr AB

The Center is located in the county of Jämtland in central Sweden. It started already 1909 as a fish farm by a local company that hatched and reared brown trout, brook charr, rainbow trout and Arctic charr. In 1948, the National Board of Fishery became in charge of the facilities and mainly used it as a field station for research on fishery management. From 1980 to 2009, the facility manly served as a hatchery of salmonid fish aimed for stocking and fish farming. It was also a national resource for all types of research on aquaculture and fishery management.

In 2009 “Aquaculture Center North INC” was formally opened August 12. The center is owned by the Arctic charr farmers, the local authorities and SLU holding and will focus on producing juvenile Arctic charr and rainbow trout to start with. Research and education will be the other main area of activity.

The facility consists of several separate buildings with 320 separate egg trays, 200 1 m2 trays, another 60 concrete and plastic trays of varying sizes (4-25 m2) as well as 12 fish ponds, each 600 m2. It is a landbased facility with water supplied from a big lake. There are several facilities such as the possibility to control temperature and light, lab facilities, aquaria for observation studies and a house with kitchen and bedrooms for visitors.

The production capacity is 30 ton fish and 5 millions eyed eggs. Presently, the production of juveniles for fish farming and stocking are 15-20 ton. The rest of the capacity is used for brood stock. The national rearing program on Arctic charr “Arctic superior” is kept here. The centre has five employees.
