Research interests

My research is mainly dealing with behaviour of fish. I am especially interested in individual differences within groups of fish and also differences between populations, to investigate how "personalities" or "behavioural syndromes" develop. An interesting question is how factors as inherent traits, environment and social context interact to shape the behaviour we observe. My main model species is Eurasian perch, Perca fluviatilis, which is one of the most common freshwater species in Sweden, and shows big variation in both morphology and behaviour. Together with students and colleagues I have used the perch in studies of behaviour, life history, morphology, and growth efficiency. I am also involved in behaviour studies on Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus in culture. Further, in an interdisciplinary project we are looking at how coastal fish are affected by noise from boats.
I have also done research on gobies, looking at different aspects of their reproductive behaviour, for example, alternative mating strategies in males.

Working areas

  •  Intraspecific variation within and between fish populations
  • The effect of personality on fish in culture
  • The effect of antropogenic disturbance on coastal fish
