Bacteriology

The research profile of the section of bacteriology includes pathogenicity and diversity of bacteria that are important in veterinary medicine.

We also work with the epidemiology of the corresponding diseases and zoonotic or potentially zoonotic bacteria. Our research activities are focused on patogenicity mechanisms, antibiotic resistance, phylogeny and characterization of new and potentially important bacteria. We are currently working with bacteria of the following genera: Bacillus, Brachyspira, Clostridium, Helicobacter, Nicoletella, Staphylococcus and Treponema.

Our background in different aspects of antibiotic resistance is strong and fastidious bacteria like treponemes can be grown in our laboratory. We have access to clinical samples from a variety of animals and diseases. Within the section we have many years of experience in 16S rRNA gene sequencing and bacterial phylogeny and we are involved in bacterial genome projects. Sequence analysis and other molecular methods are used to study bacterial diversity.
