Project title: Managing soil microbial activity to enhance nutrient acquisition and sustainable pathogen control

Soil micro-organisms have an important influence on soil fertility and plant health. Different management practices have been followed in the process of improving plant production. In conventional systems, the natural roles and function of micro-organisms have probably been neglected due to inputs of agro-chemicals. In low-input systems an alternative approach to maintain sustainability in environment friendly crop production is to utilise naturally occurring microbial antagonists and symbionts for nutrient acquisition and pathogen control.
Since 2009 I am working in the above entitled project with an aim to understand different interactions occurring between the plant and its microbial components. Strawberry is the model plant and the components are arbuscular-mycorrhizal (AMF), bacteria and fungal pathogens.

Supervisors: Prof. Roger Finaly (main), Doc. Sadhna Alström and Prof. Dan Funck Jensen
Collaborations with Drs. Shahid Mahmood and Juan Santos.
Participant of ‘µ-Hort’ research school, Alnarp and Graduate school in Organism Biology,  Ultuna

The study is carried out as the following project parts:

  1. Cultivar differences with respect to different cultivation systems and impact on soil microbial communities.
  2. Cultivar differences with respect to different cultivation systems and their influence on microbial communities in soil borne pathogen infested soils.
  3. Dynamics in rhizosphere microbial communities in response to biofumigation.
  4. Bacteria associated with AMF, and their biocontrol potential against strawberry pathogens.

Attended following conferences:

  • AM tech workshop (TRACEAM summer school), 7th -9th April 2009, Germany (Munich).
  • Multi tropic interactions in soils (IOBC), 10th-13th June, 2009, Sweden (Uppsala).
  • Bacterial genetics and Ecology (BAGECO), 15th – 19th June, 2009, Sweden (Uppsala).
  • Challenges in Sustainable plant protection in strawberries, 10th- 11th November 2009, Sweden (Alnarp).
