Tree-Stumps for Bioenergy
- Harvesting Techniques and Environmental Consequences

Thank you!

(October 27, 2011)
Welcome to the web site for the international symposium "Tree-stumps for bioenergy - harvesting techniques and environmental consequences". The symposium was held on October 24-26, 2011 at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden.

The organizing committee wishes to thank all participants for contributing to make the symposium to such a memorable and inspiring meeting.

First announcement

Tree stumps are rich in energy and are now emerging as a resource that can provide bioenergy to heating plants and thereby reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. The consequences for biodiversity, soils, waters and greenhouse gases are, however, still poorly known. To fill in the gaps of knowledge, the Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences launched a research programme on Stump harvesting and environmental effects together with the Swedish Energy Agency. This programme is now in its final phase and researchers in the programme will present their results and conclusions in the present international symposium: Tree-stumps for bioenergy – harvesting techniques and environmental consequences.

The goal of this symposium is to bring together a broad range of specialists working with stumps for bioenergy in order to build bridges across disciplines, perspectives and continents as well as to identify and to fill in gaps of knowledge. The main focus is on environmental and production effects, pest remediation and technical achievements but also on the balance between costs and benefits. At the end of the symposium, positive and negative effects of stump harvesting will be discussed and evaluated.

The symposium will be held in Uppsala, Sweden, October 24-26, 2011, and will include keynote speakers, oral presentations, poster sessions and discussions as well as a symposium dinner and a half-day field tour (weather allowing).

Looking forward to seeing you in Uppsala 2011!

Stump research at SLU

A major research programme, Tree stump harvesting and its environmental consequences, has been running at the Faculty for Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences since 2008. The outline of this programme is described on its web page below. Yearly reports are available in Swedish only.
