PhD course Interdisciplinary research in practice: exploring future agriculture and land use

This course was given during autumn 2016.

The aim of this course was to introduce students to problem-focused interdisciplinary research in the context of agricultural land use and rural development. The course explored global drivers of change while maintaining a focus on a local and Nordic setting. It explored the concept of sustainability and introduce research tools required to investigate and assess the challenges associated with sustainable agriculture, land use and food/wind/bioenergy production, as well as the choices and trade-offs that actors may be facing.

Prerequisites: Only students enrolled as PhD students were accepted. We encouraged participants with background in natural or social science, or humanities and arts, to apply.

Course length: 5 or 7.5 credits

Course period: 1 October - 9 December 2016 (5 credits), alternatively 1 October - 30 January 2017 (7.5 credits). Compulsory field week: 10-14 October.

Course organisation:
The course could be taken as a 5 or a 7,5 credit course.
The course had four parts of which the first three were mandatory for 5 credits, while all four needed to be successfully attended in order to receive 7.5 credits:
1) Literature course: introductory reading period at students own time
2) Field course in Uppsala and surroundings
3) Writing Assignment
4) Final workshop (only for 7.5 credits), SLU Uppsala

The course was given in collaboration with the research school "Society, lanscape and land use" at SLU. 

Location: One week field course in Uppsala County and SLU Uppsala.
