Hannah Ohm is a PhD student in the project: Faba bean for future food and feed

What are you doing in the project?

I am looking for varieties of the Broad bean that can be suitable for a Swedish climate and market. I work in the field, testing hundreds of different varieties, in the green house to grow selected plants and investigate their seed development, as well as in the laboratory to look deeper into certain interesting genes.

Why is the project important?

Because Sweden has a need for protein-based food and feed, and the goal of this project is to increase the production of locally grown high-quality protein crops.

What did you do before you started your PhD?

After a bachelor in garden engineering at SLU in Alnarp I worked as a city gardener for some years, before I decided to continue my studies at SLU in Umeå with a masters in ‘Forest-and Plant Biotechnology’.

Tell about one of your best moment or experiences during your PhD studies thus far!

When springtime came and all 220 varieties of broad bean, that were collected from different places all over the world, where growing in neat little squares in our test field here in south of Sweden.

The interview was conducted in 2022.
