The Uppsala Antibiotic Center is a multidisciplinary center focusing on research, education, innovation & awareness of antibiotic resistance, founded by Uppsala University. The center aims to bring together, stimulate and support important research on antibiotic resistance in Uppsala, covering a wide array of disciplines and with a one-health perspective. SLU has been a collaborator since the UAC's start in 2016, and co-funder since 2021.

Hi Eva! As a coordinator at UAC, what do you see as UAC’s main mission?

"UAC's main mission is to provide a multidisciplinary platform for the advancement of research on antibiotic resistance. At the core of our center there is a research school where PhD students are undertaking their doctoral thesis in very specific fields and answering very specific questions. Through our activities, these students receive a multidisciplinary education during their doctoral years that allows them to be exposed to other areas of importance, understand how multifaceted the antibiotic resistance field is, and make connections otherwise not possible. The center aims at training the antibiotic resistance researchers and professionals of the future, who will be able to come up with and integrate solutions that take into account the very many parts that are at play in the spread of antibiotic resistance".

In what way do you think SLU contributes to your core purpose?

"Having SLU as a collaborator, and most recently as a co-funder, is essential to our vision of a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research field on antibiotic resistance. The expertise and knowledge provided by our interactions with SLU give the center members the necessary tools to understand how antibiotic resistance and one-health are connected and deepen their education with a one-health perspective. Antibiotics, bacteria and resistance genes all move between the human, natural and animal environments, and the research and teaching provided by SLU on these topics are required to get the bigger picture of antibiotic resistance".
