I am a Ph.D. student in the field of soil biogeochemistry. I work in a synergetic project between Umeå university and SLU. My main supervisor is Mats Öquist. 



The biosphere at high latitudes is characterized by long winters, below zero soil temperatures and winter time soil CO2 efflux importantly contributing to the annual CO2 budget.

The main focus of my research is to unravel the controls on the microbial activity driving soil organic matter mineralization in frozen boreal soils. Specifically, I investigate the metabolic capacity of soil microorganisms to produce CO2 and grow while the soils are frozen.

For this purpose, I use experimental mesocosm incubations in the lab and labelled model carbon substrates. Analytical (gas chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy) and molecular (16S rDNA gene sequencing) tools allow me to track the metabolic fate of the carbon and to unveil the identity of the microorganisms involved in the processes.
