Organic broiler production is complicated in Sweden

Published: 22 November 2010

Organic chicken constitutes less than one percent of the Swedish market. Farmers in Sweden have to rely on fast-growing broiler hybrids, while the EU regulation for organic production are designed for the breeding of slow-growing chickens.

Maria Eriksson has just defended her dissertation, in which she examines the effects of holding back the growth of chickens by limiting the availability of crude protein in the feed. A positive effect was that fewer chickens suffered from leg diseases, a negative effect was that chickens occasionally picked on each other. In the longer term, one should either try to impact the regulations and shorten the rearing period, or establish slow-growing hybrids in Sweden.
