LipoDrivE is a collaborative project with the aim to convert microbial hemicellulose to high value fatty acid for sustainable biofuel and animal feed production from lignocellulose.

Research for a biobased economy

A biobased economy generates fuels, food and chemicals from renewable biomass, preferably those that cannot be used as human food.

The illustration shows an overall symbolic of the material flow investigated during this project.

The hemicellulos fraction of woody biomass is converted to fatty acids by oleaginous yeasts. These fatty acids are in turn either used as biodiesel, or fish feed ingredients.

Residues from these two production systems are then converted into valuable biogas and subsequently the residue is finally converted to a bio-fertilizer, which then can be recycled back to nature again, closing the nutrient loop.
