How much does it cost to rent R/V Svea

Last changed: 14 December 2023

R/V Svea is mainly built for Swedish environmental monitoring but is also used for Swedish and international research. There is also the opportunity to bring along students, contact the ship unit to find a suitable solution. To a limited extent, commercial businesses can also rent R/V Svea.

For Swedish authorities, the rental cost for Svea during 2024 is SEK 135,000 per day, fuels excluded. Renewable fuel (MK01) is used for Svea.

The non-subsidized price, which applies if you charter the vessel commercially, is SEK 330,000 per day, excluding fuel.

The cost for diesel fuel is calculated at SEK 13 per liter, including urea. The lessee will be charged for actual fuel prices and actual fuel consumption during the expedition, including transit from Lysekil, or the latest port, unless otherwise agreed.

Variable extra costs such as additional crew (SEK 5,000 per day) or equipment is charged according to quotation. In addition, food and accommodation is charged based on the number of booked cabins. A single cabin is SEK 840 and a double cabin is SEK 600 per person.

The rent is based on the number of days the ship is booked. The more days booked per year, the lower the fixed daily cost.

Charter the vessel: pay for transit, loading and unloading

The ship is planned to have as few transits as possible. The basic principle is that if you charter the vessel, you are responsible for all transits. Time for loading and unloading and preparation of the ship is also paid for by the tenant.

Opportunity to book R/V Svea

In 2024 the ship is scheduled for 271 days, of which 22 are expedition days. Total scheduled days are 353, and the ship is fully booked in 2024. SMHI and SLU are the largest tenants, they will together use the vessel just over half of the available time.

It is possible to join an existing expedition if the expedition leader approves it. R/V Svea can be at sea for 16 days, but if the expedition is longer than that, a land stop is required to change crew and replenish supplies.

R/V Svea has 24 single cabins and 4 double cabins in total, and out of these the crew will need at least 11 single cabins.

R/V Svea can sail in foreign territorial waters, a permit from the relevant authorities of each country is then required. The application is prepared 4 months before the start of the expedition and sent to the Ship Unit, which then applies for a permit for the expedition.
