SLU Breeding Network https://www.slu.se/en/Collaborative-Centres-and-Projects/slu-breeding-network/ Sverige nyckelaktör i europeiskt vinprojekt Climate change, disease and price increases in plant protection are some of the challenges wine producers will face in the future. Researchers now want to equip growers for a warmer and drier climate, and the solution can be found in Sweden. Therefore, researchers from nations with a long tradition in wine, such as France, Germany and Chile are collaborating with SLU. https://www.slu.se/en/ew-news/2024/2/sverige-nyckelaktor-i-europeiskt-vinprojekt/ 712412 Wed, 28 Feb 2024 10:29:15 +0100 Small RNAs – the future of plant protection? Small RNAs are common in fungi, including fungi that can be used as biocontrol agents in agriculture, horticulture, and forestry. In a new review, SLU scientists highlights the diverse function of small RNAs and their potential to manage plant diseases and insect damage in agriculture. https://www.slu.se/en/ew-news/2024/2/small-rnas--the-future-of-plant-protection/ 711201 Fri, 16 Feb 2024 10:52:20 +0100 Marken viktig att värna när jordbruket flyttar norrut Since the 1950s, the resilience of our Swedish agricultural soils has deteriorated due to increasingly intensive agriculture. In combination with climate change, this means an increased risk that the soil cannot cope with extreme weather events, which can result in severely reduced harvest. If we want fertile soil in the north that can withstand future weather extremes we need to make sure to keep up the resilience of the soil from the beginning, says Tobias Klöffel, PhD student at the Department of Soil and Environment. https://www.slu.se/en/ew-news/2024/2/marken-viktig-att-varna-nar-jordbruket-flyttar-norrut/ 710734 Wed, 14 Feb 2024 10:15:49 +0100 Forskare och beslutsfattare i dialog om EU:s markdirektiv och miljöövervakning In about 25 years, all soils in the EU should be healthy, according to the European Commission's proposal for a Soil Directive presented in the summer of 2023. The directive will entail changes in our national environmental monitoring programs for soil, but exactly how is still unclear. On February 6, a webinar was arranged where researchers and officials working with the directive exchanged knowledge about existing environmental monitoring programs in Sweden, Finland and at EU level. The current status of the negotiations on the Directive was also highlighted. https://www.slu.se/en/ew-news/2024/2/forskare-och-beslutsfattare-i-dialog-om-eus-markdirektiv-och-miljoovervakning/ 710479 Mon, 12 Feb 2024 16:22:47 +0100 SLU Centre for Biological Control's annual report 2023 “Year after year we see that biocontrol innovations provide better and better crop protection, in many cases matching or even surpassing chemical pesticides”, says Johan Stenberg, the Director of the SLU Centre for Biological Control, CBC. However, the possibilities of DNA analysis do not stop at genomic breeding values, there are more areas of use. In his PhD thesis, Christian Bengtsson investigated how we inseminate the right cow with the right bull using DNA information. https://www.slu.se/en/ew-news/2024/1/tinder-for-dairy-cattle-great-benefits-of-dna-analysis/ 702449 Wed, 17 Jan 2024 09:21:34 +0100 Advanced workshops for African bioinformatics excellence In the rapidly evolving field of bioinformatics, workshops play a crucial role in fostering knowledge sharing, collaboration, and capacity development among African students and researchers in advanced bioinformatics. In late autumn 2023, the two collaborative projects between SLU and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), EpiCass and CassavaNet4Dev, organised a comprehensive four-day workshop held simultaneously across three African countries — Ethiopia, Kenya, and Nigeria. https://www.slu.se/en/ew-news/2024/1/advanced-workshops-for-african-bioinformatics-excellence/ 702128 Thu, 11 Jan 2024 14:08:45 +0100
