New dissertation within One Health: We congratulate Karin Amsten!

Karin Amsten successfully defended her thesis in late December 2023. We took the opportunity to ask her some questions about her research and future plans.
What is your research about (the “big idea”) and how does it relate to One Health?
"My research had focused on the effect of grazing by large herbivores and fire on the vegetation in an open ecosystem. These are two natural processes that have disappeared from the modern landscape and this has a large impact on many species that are important for ecosystem services, such as pollination".
What problem does your research help to solve in the short and long term?
"Our results help to get a better understanding of which the drivers are of habitats that promote biodiversity, such as open habitats. We can also learn how to manage these habitats in a better and more sustainable way".
How can your research contribute to a more sustainable world / what impact at the societal level can the results contribute to?
"The knowledge from our research can hopefully help to improve the management of different important natural habitats, such as grasslands and fields. This is important so that we do not lose all the important species that inhabit these ecosystems, such as pollinators, which for example are important for food production".
What are your plans now after your PhD?
"I will now continue to work with research questions and to communicate research at Foundation Nordens Ark where I performed my research. I hope to reach out to more people about how important it is to work for a world rich in biodiversity for better health for everyone".
We wish Karin the best of luck in her future career!
