Beyond Borders Science-Design exchange

Last changed: 16 August 2022

This international forum for sustainable urban landscape knowledge sharing and exchange was undertaken in collaboration with teachers and researchers in landscape, science and design at Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI, USA.

The 2017-2018 Beyond Borders exchange, financed by STINT (Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education, was motivated by the long-term societal need to build sustainable urban transformation projects that recognise the fragility of ecological and social landscapes.

The project assembled architecture and landscape architecture researchers from SLU Landscape and RISD to explore how to more effectively teach and research at the intersection of design, planning, science and technology.

From the start, this exchange has had synthetic ambitions: to strengthen urban sustainability projects ongoing at both institutions by integrating knowledge inputs from landscape science, technology, planning, and architecture; to develop implementable urban landscape strategies by combining design thinking and scientific expertise to mitigate climate change impacts; and to produce a framework for productive ongoing exchange between junior and senior researchers.
