Do you want to get in touch with a researcher? Do you have a question about water and fish? We hope you will find the right person to ask below.

SLU Departments

Several of SLU’s departments have extensive water-related research, for example:

Department of Aquatic Resources

The research at the Department of Aquatic Resources  focuses on fish, shellfish and ecosystems in the seas, lakes and rivers. We monitor the aquatic environment, developing the methods and know-how for sustainable use of aquatic resources.
ContactsJoakim Hjelm, the Institute of Marine Research, Sara Bergek, the Institute of Freshwater Research and Ann-Britt Florin, the Institute of Coastal Research and the Fisheries Research Station. Professor Anna Gårdmark and Professor Anti Vasemägi

Department of Soil and Environment

The Department of Soil and Environment seeks knowledge about the interaction between man, soil, plant and the surrounding environment in forest and agricultural landscapes as well as urban environments.
Contact: Jennie Barron, Professor in agricultural water management.

Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment

The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment focused on bettering our understanding of environmental changes of inland surface waters, as well as analyses of the underlying causes of any changes. Our research includes environmental pollutants, biodiversity, and ecosystem services such as drinking water.
Contacts: Kevin Bishop, Professor in geochemistry and hydrology, Richard Johnson, Professor in ecology and biodiversity, Karin Wiberg, Professor in organic environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology, and Stefan Bertilsson, Professor in functional ecology of freshwaters.

Department of Biosystems and Technology

The Department of Biosystems and Technology explore interactions between soil, plants, animals, environment, climate and humans in systems for sustainable production of food and renewable raw materials. Our teaching and research deal with questions about sustainable and efficient use of limited resources for production in greenhouses, on agricultural land and in farm buildings.
Contacts: Malin Hultberg, external collaboration specialist in horticulture with specialisation in the food chain, and Anders Herlin, external collaboration specialist in building function with specialisation in livestock housing and ambient environment.

Department of Economics

The Department of Economics carry out research and teach in business studies and economics with application to food, agriculture and natural resources.
ContactsCarl Johan Lagerkvist, decision-making and managerial behaviour, and Johan Gaddefors, rural entrepreneurship.

Department of Energy and Technology

The Department of Energy and Technology works with water purification and focuses on how farming can contribute to a sustainable society. We have extensive expertise in technology and systems for sustainable production of food and bioenergy, including optimal nutrition circuits and logistics systems.
Contacts: Björn Vinnerås, Professor with research in life cycle technique, and Jennifer Mcconville, researcher in sanitation and wastewater management.

Department of Animal Nutrition and Management

The Department of Animal Nutrition and Management conducts research and teaching about nutrition and management of several animal species such as cattle, pigs, poultry, reindeer, fish, horses and dogs.
Contact: Anders Kiessling, Professor in aquaculture.

Department of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management

The Department of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management is Sweden’s main academic institution for education in the landscape professions and, as a part of SLU Landscape, for research related to the landscape field.
Contact: Ingrid Sarlöv Herlin, Professor of landscape planning.

Department of Molecular Sciences

The Department of Molecular Sciences conducts research in the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, food science and microbiology with focus on fundamental aspects as well as sustainable development and applications in the Green sector.
ContactIngmar Persson, Professor with research on metals in natural waters and soils.

Department of Forest Mycology and Plant Pathology

The Department of Forest Mycology and Plant Pathology works with microorganisms in wetlands, lakes and groundwater as well as water purification and drinking water treatment.
Contacts: Professor Sara Hallin and Associate senior lecturer Sari Peura.

Department of Forest Ecology and Management

The Department of Forest Ecology and Management advance the understanding of forest ecosystem processes and progress the principles of forest ecosystem management.
Contact: Ulf Skyllberg, Professor with research on quicksilver in water, and Hjalmar Laudon, Professor in forest landscape biogeochemistry.

Department of Urban and Rural Development

The Department of Urban and Rural Development pursue education, research and external collaboration in agrarian history, environmental communication, landscape architecture and rural development.
Contacts: Researchers Hanna Bergeå and Sofie Joosse.

Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies

The Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies are doing research, education, environmental monitoring and assessment in the field of zoology.
Contact: Anders Alanärä, Professor with research in aquatic ecology, and Tomas Brodin, Professor of aquatic ecology.

Collaborative Centres and Projects

Many of the collaborative centers and projects at SLU are engaged in water or aquatic ecosystems, for example:

Field Research Stations

SLU is the host and coordinator of SITES - Swedish Infrastructure for Ecosystem Science. SITES is a nationally coordinated infrastructure for terrestrial and limnological field research. Stations within SITES with water related infrastructure are the research stations Abisko, Asa, Erken, Grimsö, Lönnstorp, Röbäcksdalen, Skogaryd and Svartberget.
