Supply of crop nutrients is crucial for maintaining high yields. At the same time, the production and use of nitrogen in particular contributes to environmental problems such as eutrophication and climate change. At the department, we evaluate the effect of more efficient use of manure and chemical fertilizers, and of replacing chemical fertilizer nitrogen with biological nitrogen supply or with plant nutrients recycled from various waste and wastewater streams. We also evaluate the resource use and environmental effects of different crops and how we can replace today's soy imports with protein from pasture-based biorefineries.
