Doctoral students

The eight doctoral students affiliated with the SLU and Sparbanken Skåne Centre for Sustainable Primary Production cover the full breadth of the food system – from genetics and plant breeding to urban farming, governance and energy integration. Together, they bring new perspectives to the sustainable food production of the future.

Ananta Aacharya

"Crop cultivation in combination with solar panels on arable land – How does it contribute to the future need for food and energy in a profitable way?" Primary supervisor: Daniel Nilsson, Department of Biosystems and Technology

Andrew Gallagher

"Transformative governance for a sustainable food system" Primary supervisor: Fredrik Fernqvist, Department of People and Society

Linda Groot Nibbelink

Doctoral student Linda Groot Nibbelink is investigating the potential of Nordic heirloom vegetables to strengthen Swedish food security. Garden orache and swede could become lifesavers if imports of inputs are disrupted – and in an increasingly warming climate.

Luboš Říha

A fascination with transformations in all their forms – Pokémon, spruce trees or potatoes – is what drives SLU doctoral student Luboš Říha. An EU decision that opens the door to broader use of genomic techniques is good news for his career.

Mina Nešić

Mina Nešić

The doctoral student Mina Nešić spends her days studying the properties of pea and faba bean. The goal is to contribute to the development of new varieties with desired seed qualities for human consumption – for example, as a sustainable source of protein.

Yizhi Zhang

Doctoral student Yizhi Zhang wants to see greenhouses integrated onto rooftops in Sweden. By making use of empty surfaces while also acting as insulation for the buildings below, she hopes to contribute to resource-efficient and sustainable food production in urban environments.
