The PhD-course "Sustainability in a globalized world - tools and concepts" hosted by GCUA 2030 is about to finish. To see how the students like the course, we asked one of the participants, Vera, what she thinks about it.

Can you tell us a little about the course?

The course is organised by the GCUA 2030 international network and has a very strong emphasis on sustainable development. The aspects that are discussed in the course are how to turn research into action, how to teach sustainable development and what competencies are needed for it.

How come you apply for it?

I learned about the course through my home university. Canvas is used as a platform for the course, which means that you can study from any corner of the world. The course is structured in 4 modules, each of them containing smaller and bigger assignments. The course is very convenient to follow because each small assignment is related to a specific topic and then these small assignments are used for the final assignment of every module.

How can you apply your new knowledge from the course in the future?

The course gives a universal knowledge that can be applied in academia and outside of it. Let me take module 1 as an example. This module teaches the Theory of Change. This theory presents a structured approach to develop a project with consequent real-life implementation. It can be a project of any kind, not only research-related. The assignments in this module are built to suit a project at any stage: if you are at the initial stage, you can use the Theory of Change to develop the entire project; if your project is already evolved, you can still integrate the elements of the Theory of Change into it and make a real difference with your project!

What would you say to others thinking about joining this course?

I would not have any doubts to recommend this course to every PhD-student who feels related to the principles of sustainable development. It gives not only knowledge, but also an inspiration to work with your project.
