Burcu Yigit Turan
I study urbanisation and landscape architectural history, theory and criticism of the twentieth century and onwards from critical social and cultural perspectives. My recent works have concentrated on the cultural landscapes of planetary urbanisation and emancipatory planning and design practices in critical cultural and ecological contexts.
Urban development and landscape urbanism
Landscape architecture: History, theory and practice
My research interest consists of different layers related to socio-spatial dialectic of contemporary (urban) cultural landscapes [particularly landscapes in crises: areas under symbolic or physical conflict, cities developed through neoliberal urban policies, refugee camps, ethnic ghettos, informal neighborhoods, spaces of dissent …]:
- critical socio/cultural-spatial analysis of landscapes for revealing/mapping injustice, homogenization, exclusion, social/cultural/ecological impoverishment;
- reading visible (physical traces in landscapes) and invisible (meanings, values, ideologies, memories, emotions, everyday practices, heritage, ephemerality…) complexities;
- visualization/artistic representation of landscape ethnographies;
- social and cultural contextualization/theoretisation and criticism of landscape architectural theories, works, and practices (20th Century and onwards);
- design ethnographies/design as a social practice for seeding new socio-cultural&ecological futures for positive transformation + envisioning future heritage
My current research agenda has revolved around the issue of landscape heritage in the context of migration.
