I work with the processes, roles and use of urban open spaces that keep them relevant and valued. For almost 25 years I have studied and promoted urban nature, and has a special interest in the concept of Nature-based Solutions / Nature-based Cities. Currently my academic profile lies within the interface of different scientific approaches.
I am a full professor at SLU Landscape, and has until 2019 also served as part-time professor at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. From 2009 - 2019, I was Honorary Professor at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Until 2008 I held a full professorship at University of Copenhagen, after which I worked in private business. During 2008-2010 I was HoD/Business Unit Director at NIRAS Consultants, the largest private planning company in Denmark, and from 2011-2015 I was Business Developer at HedeDanmark, the largest landscape company in Scandinavia. Here, my focus was on development of public-private partnerships, as well as identifyng and acquiring a company in Sweden, leading into HedeDanmarks Nordic internationalization.
Today, I work with the processes, roles and use of urban open spaces that keep them relevant and valued. In doing so, I have a special interest in the concepts of Strategic Urban Open Space Management and Nature-based Solutions. ‘Strategic Management’ includes i) the processes of planning, (re)design, (re)construction and maintenance, and ii) it encompass policy making, tactical provision as well as operational activities. The concept of Nature-based Solutions is understood as an overall approach towards Strategic Management.

I am cuurently serving as associate editor of the following journals:
Urban Forestry & Urban Greening
Frontiers in Environmental Sciences, Section of Land Use Dynamics
I contribute to a number of courses, primarily at SLU, but has previously also taught at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and at University of Copenhagen. I contribute primarily within the Landscape Architecture and Landscape Engeneering programs. Today, I have various program and course responsibilities within the new Forest & Landscape program.
I frequently supervise students at all levels for their thesis work.
During my career, I have studied and promoted the role of urban green spaces, and especially the role of urban trees. I have a special interest in management of urban open spaces for better human health and well-being. Green spaces play a crucial role in supporting urban ecological and social systems, a fact recognized in public policy commitments in most parts of the world. The amount of provision, the distribution of green space and the ease of access to such spaces are key contributors to social and ecological functions in urban environments.
The term ‘Management’ is a combination of Planning and Maintenance, denoted as 'Strategic Management'. In strategic management, policy making, tactical provision and operational activities are all included and equally considered.
I have a social-ecological focus on my research, emphasising users, users needs and preferences. The purpose of my research is to develop management solutions of urban open spaces, with a strategic management mindset which reduces resources, and increses use.
Thomas has a M.Sc. in Landscape Architecture from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark (1990), and a PhD in Landscape Planning also from the University of Copenhagen (1996). He has worked for the Danish Forest and Landscape Research Institute as researcher, senior consultant and senior researcher (1996 – 2003), and as professor in Urban Greening & Park Management (2003 – 2008). In late 2008 he left academia to become Head of Department and later Business Unit Director at NIRAS Consultants (2008 – 2011), after which he became Business Developer for HedeDanmark, the largest landscaping company in Scandinavia (2011 – 2015). During 2014 he became interim CEO at a Swedish landscaping company (Väla Mark & Trädgård) when acquired by HedeDanmark. In February 2015, Thomas vent back to academia to further his career as a researcher in green space planning and management at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). In January 2016, Thomas was appointed as full professor in Urban Green Space Management at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences Department of Landscape Architecture and Spatial Planning in a 15% position.
Thomas was appointed Honorary Professor at University of Copenhagen in 2009 for a period of 5 years. This position was extended in 2014 until 2019. In 2013- 2015 he was acting as Professor at SLU in a 20% position, and became a full professor at SLU in Urban Open Space Management in June 2016.
Thomas was co-founder (with Cecil Konijnendijk) of the scientific journal Urban Forestry and Urban Greening , published by Elsevier since 2002. During his career, Thomas has produced more than 400 publications, including peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, edited proceedings and books, scientific and professional articles, and conference papers. He serves as associate editor for four journals, and reviewer for a number of peer-reviewed publications related to green space planning and management.
Thomas has been involved in a range of international networking and project activities. He initiated and coordinated the COST Action on Urban Forests & Trees (funded by the European Union), and participated in the twinning cooperation for sustainable forestry between Denmark and Malaysia. He has advised the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on urban and peri-urban forestry issues, and has served as project evaluator in e.g. Sweden, Norway, Finland, USA, UK, Singapore and Hong Kong.
Thomas has served on a number of boards, including the Danish Association of Landscape Architects (1997-1999), International Society of Arboriculture (2000-2005), Danish Tree Care Association (Chairman 1998 – 2001), Danish Garden Cultural Foundation (Chairman 2005 – 2010), Danish Landscape Constructors Organisation (2012 – 2014), and Nordic Fund for Urban Trees (since 1998, Chairman since 2010). In 2019 Thomas became International Fellow of The Royal Swedish Academy of Forestry and Agriculture, and in 2020 Member of the Royal Fysiografic Society in Lund, Sweden, Academy for Natural Sciences, Medicin and Techniqe.
I regulary supervise BSc, MSC and PhD students within the (urban) landscape management fields.
