I have always been interested in understanding animals’ response to their dynamic environment - a system including humans, which is the red thread in my education and research. Addressing research questions that combine behavioral and movement ecology builds thus the optimal link to feed my interest. Today´s expansion of human activity increases not only the frequency of contacts between wildlife and humans year-around, but also leaves long-lasting ecological footprints in wildlife habitat. The overarching goal of my research is to improve our understanding of the ecological effects of the structure and the dynamics of human activity on wildlife (both recreational activities and infrastructure). My main interests concern the behaviour and movement ecology of wildlife within the context of landscape ecological aspects, specifically with respect to human-wildlife interactions. Within my area of research I combine empirical and GIS-based approaches and use statistical and spatial analysis.

Research

Recent projects I have been involved in considered the movement behavior and resource utilization of sympatric living moose and reindeer in the mountainous landscape as well as the impact of wind park development on the spatial distribution of reindeer. Another finalized exciting projects where I was involved focused on green comprehensive landscape planning in the mountain region with Vilhelmina municipality as a pilot study. Currently, I am involved in four projects. (1) the Beyond Moose (project leader: Joris Cromsigt (SLU), funded by the Swedish EPA) that focuses on ungulate interactions in multi-species systems and their impacts on surrounding environment in human-modified landscapes. (2) Sustainable Establishment of Wind Power (project leader: Johan Svensson (SLU), funded by Vindval) that studies conflicts and synergies among different areas of national interests. (3) Circuitscape (project leader Lisa Sjölund (SWECO), funded by the Swedish Transport Administration) where we evaluate barrier effects of infrastructure and possibilities for passage of wildlife. (4) “Balancing conflicting goals in the forest: timber production, hunting quotas and biodiversity” (project leader Anouschka Hof (SLU/Wageningen University) where we with help of simulations try to find optimal levels to maximize all interests. I am project leader for three different moose marking projects. “Älg och rådjur i stormarnas spår” studies moose and roe deer movement behavior and resource utilization following the storms Gudrun (2005) and Per (2007) in the county of Kronoberg. ”Förvaltningsmärkning Älg Norrbotten - vilt och skog” studies the movement and landscape utilization of moose in the coastal and inland areas of Norrbotten. In the high alpine area (latitude 67) around the village Nikkaluokta we study the effects of climate on larger herbivores. Comparing data on movement behavior and resource utilization of moose from different areas in Sweden, give us the opportunity to address research questions along a north-south gradient as well as we can study meta-populations dynamics.
