PARC aims to improve the risk assessment of chemicals in the environment and in food/drinking water with the goal of reducing exposure to hazardous chemicals and improving the potential for the development of more sustainable chemicals. PARC is a European research and innovation program that runs for 7 years.

Background

Society depends on chemicals, and the move towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly society requires new knowledge about the chemicals already in the environment and those being developed by the chemical industry. The EU needs a new way of assessing the risks of chemicals using a more holistic approach that integrates different types of knowledge and methods in chemical analysis and toxicity estimation.

Project overview

PARC aims to stimulate scientific collaboration and will provide a unique opportunity for different risk assessment actors to work together within the systems and time horizons linked to sector-specific regulatory frameworks. By identifying opportunities and pooling efforts at national and European level, the programme will optimize the resources dedicated to chemical risk assessment and monitoring and accelerate progress in these areas.

HBIO scientists are involved in several work packages within the project, including in the areas of molecular toxicology, environmental toxicology, environmental monitoring, exposure modeling, risk assessment and early warning systems.

Facts:

The project is expected to last from 2022 to 2029 and is funded by The EU's Ninth Framework Program (Horizon Europe) for research and innovation.
