NJV - a multicultural department
The department is organised jointly between the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (VH) and the Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences (NJ). Research and education are carried out in an interdisciplinary environment in close collaboration between soil, plant, and animal disciplines. NJV attracts researcher from all over the world. Today we have staff from around ten countries and six continents.
A department with a long history
In 1954 it was determined that there would be an experimental station on Röbäcksdalen outside Umeå . The year 1993 the Department of Agricultural Research for Northern Sweden was formed. In autumn 2008, the researchers and a large part of the lab operations moved to the SLU building ("Skogis") on Umeå campus. The fields and the dairy barn are still active on Röbäcksdalen, which is now part of the city of Umeå, and the farm is a good example of urban agriculture.
Where to find us
Offices, meeting rooms, lecture rooms and laboratories are centrally located on campus in Umeå. The research station Röbäcksdalen (experimental fields and dairy research barn) is located about 5 km from campus just south of Umeå centre. Both Umeå campus and Röbäcksdalen are about 4 km from Umeå airport. There's a train station (Umeå Östra) and a bus station (NUS) at the hospital, which is a 5 minute walk from SLU campus. There's also a train and a bus station in central Umeå, which are about 3 km from Röbäcksdalen.
There's a map over Umeå in the link sections where NJV's facilites, the airport, and train and bus stations have been marked. Check the contact section at the bottom of the page for interactive maps of Umeå campus and Röbäcksdalen.
