Artemia lab

The brine shrimp Artemia is an aquatic invertebrate that are widely used as a live feed for farmed fish and shrimps. It has also become popular animal model organisms in many biological disciplines. The model Artemia offers a multipurpose platform to carry out cutting-edge basic and applied researches in the field of farmed aquatic and terrestrial animals.

Brine shrimp Artemia as an animal model for biological research

As an animal model, Artemia has several important advantages over other model systems

  • Small size
  • Inexpensive and easy to handle
  • Highly controllable and high-throughout
  • Continuous supply/availability of the animals for experiments
  • Possibility to run experiments under germ-free conditions
  • Genome sequenced
  • Whole-animal realistic responses
  • Genetics and molecular toolboxes optimized (RNAi, qPCR, immunoblot and immunohistochemistry, microscopy)
