Datacollection from recreational fisheries

Last changed: 17 April 2023

SLU Aqua samples fish caught in recreational fisheries in the South West Baltic Sea, on behalf of the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management. The data collection contributes to more reliable stock assessments in order to improve the management of Baltic Cod. The sampling is performed as part of the EU Data Collection Framework (DCF).

Sampling

SLU collects data from fish caught by anglers along the west and south coasts of Scania, southern Sweden. The length and weight of the fish are collected, measurements that are used to describe the size composition of the fish stock. The ear stones (otoliths) are collected and used in age determination analyses.

The sampling is conducted randomly at all landing sites in the area (tour boats, charter boats, private boats and on shore) to describe the extent of recreational fishing, including the number of active anglers and their catch. Sampling focuses on cod, but other species are also sampled. The sampling procedures for recreational fisheries resembles the sampling that SLU performs in commercial fisheries. The collected data is used in stock assessments, both nationally and internationally.

Recreational fishing is of great social and economic importance, and it affects the population size and growth of the stock. The EU Commission imposes increasing demands on Sweden to maintain statistics on their recreational fisheries, in order to improve the management of fish stocks.
