The history of the Fisheries Research Station at Älvkarleby is very much the same as the history of fishing and fish farming in Sweden. The experiments with the hatching of fish larvae began in the mid-1800s. Small fish farms and hatcheries were built, and one of them was the hatchery in Älvkarleby (1871).

Since then, the Fisheries Research Station at Älvkarleby has developed into a field station with sophisticated equipment and specially built facilities for ecological and ethological fisheries research.
