We offer a world leading postgraduate education in the subject of forest ecology and management, with our research areas spanning from basic process understanding to applied management of forest ecosystems. Our focus includes boreal forest primarily, but also temperate and tropical forest ecosystems.
Our department has approximately 20 PhD students, who are mentored by Senior Researchers in a wide range of research subjects focused on forests. At the beginning of the PhD program, each student develops their individualized research and study plan that prepares them to become an expert within a specific area within the forest sciences. PhD students in our department have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and instruments, and mentorship by internationally renowned researchers in the forest sciences, and highly popular PhD courses.
We are also Co-coordinating a new research school REFOREST with PhD-positions open in Africa. The programme is organised as a research school and applies a “regional sandwich model”, in which all coursework and thesis write-up are undertaken at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in Tanzania, whereas field data collection is conducted in the candidates’ home countries.
“I had a fantastic time doing my PhD in Umeå at the department of Forest Ecology and Management. Not only because the department offers a stimulating environment with researchers working on a wide range of disciplines, but also because I have made friends from all over the world!” Nadia Maaroufi – PhD completed 2016.
”This was a completely excellent course that definitely benefited me a lot by broadening my horizon in my research field. I also made a bunch of friends from different countries.” - Anonymous student evaluation of PhD course Watershed Ecology and Biogeochemistry
