Work description: Rodomiro Ortiz was born in 1958 in Lima, Peru. He has a BSc in biology and an MSc in plant breeding from UNALM (Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina) in their home country, and he received his doctorate in 1991 in plant breeding and genetics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the US. This was followed by positions as geneticist at UNALM, the International Potato Center (CIP) in Lima, Rutgers University, USA, and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Nigeria. Unde the years 1997-1999 he was professor of plant genetic resources at the former Royal Veterinaer- og Landbohøjskolen (KVL) in Copenhagen. Furthermore, he has held senior positions at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in India, IITA in Nigeria and Uganda, and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in Mexico. He has also been advisor in several international, regional and national organizations involved in agricultural development.
Work description: Current research: Plant breeding for improved disease resistance in cereals. Molecular markers applied in resistance breeding. Site-directed mutagenesis of susceptibility genes for disease and aphid resistance in several crops.
