Biological Soil Mapping (BioSoM)

Biological Soil Mapping (BioSoM) is a thematic research program at the NL-faculty, aiming to give scientific support towards a new service to farmers detecting soil borne pathogens and advising in crop management to optimize crop rotation and production in Sweden.

The overall aims of the BioSoM Phase II program are to:

  • Develop reliable methods for detecting and quantifying soilborne pathogens
  • Identify factors behind the increase and decline in soilborne pathogens
  • Introduce a new dimension to implementation of results and decision-making.

The research departments involved and stakeholders

End-products and new services that we expect BioSoM Phase II to provide to stakeholders are:

  • Generation of sound data for establishment of a testing service for soilborne pathogens in soil samples from farmers and official field research trials
  • Development of methods for effective presentation of results of soil testing using IT and PA technology 
  • Provision of information for integrated pest management (IPM) procedures in crops and crop rotations, i.e. preliminary de facto correlations between disease severity and infestation level, including advisory recommendations and procedures for reduction of soil infestation using site-specific addition of nutrients.
