Cell Biology

The course concentrates on central themes and experimental methods used within cell biology. The course is meant to give an understanding of basic mechanisms and principles. After completing the course the students should have a good understanding of eukaryotic cell structure, growth, differentiation and specialisation as well as cell-cell co-operation.

Objectives

The aim of the course is to give basic knowledge and laboratory training in cell biology.
After completing the course the student will be able to:
- describe the cell structure, function and regulatory mechanisms
- describe key concepts in molecular cell biology
- know the main cell biology laboratory methods
- use basic laboratory techniques in cell biology

Content

The course gives basic knowledge in cell biology and laboratory training in cellbiological methods.
Lectures and group excerises address:
- cells and their components
- biological membranes
- transport across membranes
- extracellular environment
- cell proliferation
- cell differentiation and tissue formation
- cell communication
- stem cells and cloning

Laborations deal with key cell biological methods.

Formats and requirements for examination

Passed written exams. Attendance of obligatory activities and approved presentation of compulsory elements, including laboratory reports.

The compulsory moments consists of introduction lecture, laboratory work with following discussions and group exercises.
  • If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.
  • If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.
  • If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.
  • For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline. For more information on this, please refer to the regulations for education at Bachelor's and Master's level.

Modul A: Skriftlig tentamen, 5,5 Hp (U/3/4/5)

Examination av modul A sker i form av skriftlig sluttentamen i två delar (en quizz-del och en fritext-del)

Kurslitteratur utgörs av kursboken Essential Cell Biology av Alberts et al. (upplaga 4 eller 5) samt slides från föreläsningar

För betyget 3 skall studenten kunna...

  • beskriva uppbyggnad, bildande och övergripande funktion av den eukaryota cellens generella strukturer
  • redogöra för grundläggande särdrag hos olika eukaryota celler och jämföra dessa med prokaryota celler
  • beskriva de huvudsakliga transportvägarna i en eukaryot cell
  • beskriva grunderna för reglering av genuttryck och genomevolution
  • redogöra översiktligt för kommunikation mellan eukaryota celler
  • beskriva grunderna för hur celler interagerar med varandra och med extracellulärt matrix vid vävnadsbildning
  • beskriva eukaryota cellers livscykel, tillväxt och specialisering
  • beskriva principerna för hur brister i reglering av cellfunktioner kan leda till cancer
  • redogöra för centrala cellbiologiska metoder och exemplifiera vad de kan användas till
