Objectives

The course gives basic knowledge of soil properties and plant biology, and provides a basis for continued studies in crop production.

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

• describe the properties of the soil as well as how physical, chemical and biological processes in the soil influence the conditions for crop production

• explain the relationships between properties of different fertilizers- and soil improvement compounds and their effects on crop production and soil processes

• use knowledge of the physiology and anatomy of plants to describe how choice of crop (including choice of variety), soil properties and other environmental factors influence crop production

• explain the basic principles of sustainable development in crop production

Content

The course uses different pedagogical formats to promote teacher-led knowledge dissemination, as well as student activity and discussions, through lectures, literature studies, exercises, laboratory practicals, assignments, seminars, and study visits. Communication with the surrounding community is promoted via external lectures and study visits. Furthermore, the teaching is linked to both national and international research through lectures and literature studies.

The course covers the following topics: physical and chemical structure of the soil, soil biology, dynamics of the occurrence of water and nutrients in the soil, plant anatomy, photosynthesis, respiration, the influence of internal and external factors on growth and development, plant uptake of water and nutrients, impact of climate and weather on soil and plants, crop production planning and crop rotations.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Passed written examinations and written assignments as well as active participation in scheduled compulsory components.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
• For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
