ObjectivesThe course provides training in the ability to combine knowledge from different subjects to obtain a holistic view on crop production in the agricultural area.
On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- describe how soil- and plant characteristics, crop management, and environmental factors interact and influence conditions for crop production
- demonstrate knowledge of important weeds and pests and their influence on crop production
- identify and suggest solutions as well as preventive measures on problems in the crop production area
- explain and independently assess, analyse and evaluate the implementation and outcome of crop management practices, with respect to biological, technical and economic aspects
- at a general level, describe and explain the Swedish forestry model with respect to forest production, nature conservation and social values
- discuss national and global market conditions as well as ethical issues related to crop production
- explain how factors, such as choice of crop, management practices and environmental factors influence sustainable development in crop production
ContentThe course uses different pedagogical formats to promote teacher-led knowledge dissemination as well as student activity and discussions, through lectures, literature studies, exercises, laboratory practicals, field studies, seminars, and thesis. Communication with the surrounding community is promoted via external lectures and study visits. Furthermore, the teaching is linked to both national and international research through lectures and literature studies.
The course gives knowledge about crop production planning and crop rotations, plant protection, production biology, product quality of agricultural and horticultural field crops as well as preconditions for sustainable Swedish forestry. The course provides basic knowledge of how Swedish forestry is carried out with management, planning and use of forest products, as well as exercises in forestry estimations. The course also contains in-depth group exercises about the production biology, crop production planning and crop rotations, as well as an individual thesis describing the production of a chosen crop from a cropping systems perspective. The students will also take part of laboratory sessions and study visits.
The course consists of three components: Agricultural cropping system, Agricultural plants and pests and Forestry.
Formats and requirements for examinationPassed written examinations and written assignments as well as active participation in scheduled compulsory components such as group presentations and seminars.
- If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.
- If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.
- If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.
