Immunology and Genetics at the Organismal and Molecular Levels

The course comprises immunology and genetics. Laboratory practicals constitute an important part of the course.

In lectures and compulsory group exercises the following sections are addressed:

  • immune and lymphatic systems and their role in infections and cancer

  • allergies (allergic diseases)

  • antibody structure and properties, and production of antibodies

  • DNA and chromosomal structure

  • cell division and formation of gametes

  • Mendelian and quantitative genetics

  • replication, transcription, translation and gene regulation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes

  • mutations, transpositions and DNA repair

In laboratory practicals (compulsory) modern techniques within immune detection and molecular genetics are applied.

During a project work (compulsory) the students are summarizing selected literature within a subject in genetics. The literature project is presented both orally and in a written report.

Welcome
Welcome to the course Immunologi och genetik på organism- och molekylär nivå (BI1280), 2020! The course starts on September 1st via Zoom meeting at 09:15. We will be using the following text-books for the course: Understanding Immunology, 3rd edition (2012), Peter Wood Pearson Education Ltd. ISBN-10: 0273730681; ISBN-13: 9780273730682 Klug, W.S., Cummings, M.R., Spencer, C.A. and Palladino, M.A. Essentials of Genetics, Ninth Edition (2016) Pearson Education Ltd. ISBN 9781292108865 The schedule uploaded on August 3rd can be found at the course web-site. As teachers, we consider the students comments from the evaluations and do our best to maintain the high standard when arranging the course each year. Over the years, the structure of the course has undergone significant changes based on the evaluations from previous years. New this year: three more lectures relevant to agronomy/food science have been added, the third exam (“take-home exam”) has been omitted from the course. This year the course will be provided in a digital format via Zoom-meetings and pre-recorded labs (video files). However, two exams will be held on campus. If you have questions concerning the course please contact: eugene.savenkov@slu.se Please notice that the administration of the course is entirely in English. The teaching is going to be in Swedish and in English.
