Floristics, entomology and field studies in arable land
Information from the course leader

Knowledge equivalent to general entry requirements and Biology 2.Objectives
The course has three main objectives. First, to enable students to follow the development and interaction of crops, weeds and pests during the summer season. Second, to provide knowledge of some of the companies and organizations that are potential employers for the students. Finally, to learn to recognize the common plants and insects in nature.
The aim of the course is to learn to recognize the most common plants and insects in nature
After completing the course the student should be able to
Describe the biological perquisites for the cultivation of commonly occurring crops.
Account for cultivation measures during the summer
Briefly describe the development of the crops.
Identify and describe crop-limiting factors, such as attacks by pests and weed competition in field.
The student should be able to discuss the need for control and appropriate control measures (screening).
identify common wild plant species on the basis of their appearance, growth habit and environment.
identify common wild insect species on the basis of their appearance, growth habit and environment
Content
In the course section "field studies in arable land", the development of crops and attacks of weeds and pests are assessed. The assessment includes the need for control measures. The course section’s study trip also includes visits to, for example, consulting, machine and processing companies. The field studies, including the study trip are compulsory as well as a seminar assignment that concludes the course.
The floristic and entomology section starts with lectures and an overview of plant and insects systematics, appearance, and adaptation to the environment.
A significant part of the time in field is devoted to species identification, but also to exercises to identify plants and insects using identification literature.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Approved examination, active participation on compulsory subjects and approved written report from field studies and study visits.
- If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
- The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
- If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
- For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
