Prior knowledge

Knowledge corresponding to at least 90 credits in veterinary nursing, of which 30 credits in veterinary nursing in animal healthcare.

Objectives

The purpose of the course is to give the student enhanced knowledge in intensive and emergency care for horses, dogs, cats and exotic pets. The course also aims to give the student general knowledge of research animals.

After completing the course, students shall be able to:
- describe nursing care of neonatal, juvenile and geriatric animals, as well as animals with different medical conditions. Identify deviations and propose and justify relevant nursing care actions in intensive and emergency care.
- describe and justify triaging, the use of technical medical equipment and the monitoring of animals in intensive and emergency care,
- interpret, identify deviations and propose measures for preliminary assessment of blood test results in intensive and emergency care,
- propose and justify the choice of fluid therapy in intensive and emergency care,
- reflect on ethical and animal protection issues in intensive and emergency care,
- describe current legislation in research animal studies and discuss ethical issues arising in research animal facilities.

Content

By means of lectures, problem-based teaching and compulsory elements such as seminars and practical exercises, teaching is given in intensive and emergency care of horses, dogs, cats and exotic pets. The course describes various treatment strategies, as well as nursing needs in intensive and emergency care and the student practises a scientific attitude to veterinary nursing. The course includes research animal studies and the student is given the opportunity to gain knowledge and insight in the subject, including how the 3 Rs (Replace, Reduce and Refine) can be applied through lectures and discussions.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Approved written examination and approved participation in compulsory elements.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

• The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.

Additional information

Teaching will primarily be in Swedish, but some lectures and course literature are in English.

For students in the Veterinary nursing candidate programme and the veterinary nurse programme, the entry requirement is fulfilled by course DO0081 and one of the courses DO0082 or DO0110, DO0112 and DO0115.



The entry requirement for the course is fulfilled by a two-year veterinary nurse course.
