Prior knowledge

Knowledge corresponding to at least 90 credits in veterinary nursing, of which 14 credits in animal anatomy and physiology including 3 credits in the musculoskeletal system and 5.5 credits in imaging diagnostics, communication and diseases of the musculoskeletal system in animal healthcare.

Objectives

The purpose of the course is that the student shall gain basic theoretical and certain practical knowledge of rehabilitation in veterinary nursing, primarily regarding horses, dogs and cats.

After completing the course, students shall be able to:
- describe in general terms how the tissues of the musculoskeletal system react to injury, during healing and to different degrees of stress,
- from a scientific perspective, describe in general terms indications, explanatory models and methodology for a selection of rehabilitation and examination techniques,
- perform in practice a selection of rehabilitation and examination techniques,
- describe appropriate nursing measures for rehabilitation of animals with illness and/or injury,
- reflect on questions of ethics, animal protection and occupational safety that could arise in rehabilitation work.

Content

By means of lectures, compulsory demonstrations and compulsory exercises on live animals, cadavers and models, students gain theoretical knowledge of rehabilitation in veterinary nursing, such as rehabilitation after illness or injury to the musculoskeletal system. The teaching focuses on veterinary nursing, on tissue injuries and when, how and why a selection of examination and treatment methods is used. The course includes a compulsory study visit to a rehabilitation clinic.

By means of reports, discussions and scrutiny of articles, students study ethical, evidence-based rehabilitation in veterinary nursing.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Approved examination and approved participation in compulsory elements.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
• For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

• The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.

Additional information

Teaching will primarily be in Swedish, but some lectures and course literature are in English.



The entry requirement for the course is fulfilled by a two-year veterinary nurse course or by both the courses DO0064 Introduction to veterinary nursing, 6 credits and DO0059 Animal anatomy and physiology, 10 credits.
