The objective of the course is to allow students to improve their skills in planning, carrying out and presenting a piece of their own work within a specified time. Students will also have the opportunity develop their skills in scientific writing and deepen their knowledge of the subject. The work can involve e.g. plant material, cultivation, production, product handling, product quality or use.
On completion of the course students will be able to:
identify problems and formulate issues within the subject
independently produce a piece of scientific work
present their scientific work orally and in writing
critically appraise the work of another student and provide constructive criticism.
Content
The degree project is carried out with its starting point either in a review of the literature, or in carrying out a scientific experiment of limited scope.
A work plan for the degree project is drawn up by the student in consultation with the supervisor. This work plan must be approved by the course director before the start of the work. The work involves independently searching for, collating and using relevant information on the issue/s and carrying out an independent analysis and drawing conclusions from the study material. The results must be presented orally and in writing. Each student must also provide constructive criticism of another student’s work.

The examination consists of a written report and oral presentation in seminar form. In order to obtain the credits for the course, students must have independently carried out and written up a piece of scientific work, published an examiner-approved version of this work in Epsilon and satisfactorily appraised the degree project of another student.
If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.
If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.
If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.
For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline. For more information on this, please refer to the regulations for education at Bachelor's and Master's level.
Transitional provisions
• Exams: At least three retake sessions (renewed exams) will be offered within two years of the decision to discontinue the course. • Compulsory components: At least one opportunity for a retake session will be offered within two years of the decision to discontinue the course.Other information
