Objectives

The general aim of the course is to provide knowledge of the chemical composition of the feeds and how the metabolism of the nutrients takes place in different animal species. The student should also be provided knowledge of risks in the form of toxins and anti-nutritional substances in feed as well as the microbial status of the feed.

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- describe relationships between the animals’ cell biology, anatomy, physiology and their ability to utilize various types of feeds,
- account for the basics of the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids,
- describe the role and function in the mineral and vitamin metabolism,
- explain the principles of the energy metabolism and what influences energy requirement
- describe the most common chemical feed analyses and calculated nutritional values
- explain the principles of how anti-nutritional substances are metabolized as well as how they influence the animal,
- account for feed conservation principles,
- discuss the role of microorganisms with regard to occurrence of toxins as well as methods for harvest and storage,
- interpret results of microbiological analyses,
- account for the main environmental impact of production and consumption of feeds as well as evaluate this from a sustainability perspective.

Content

Lectures take place about the nutritional content in feeds and how these are implemented in different animal species. Lectures and exercises take place in analysis and calculation methods for nutrients including the energy concept. Also the contents of the toxic and anti-nutritional substances of feed are treated. The microbial part of the course has focus on feed safety, where lectures and laboratory sessions treat identification of microorganisms and factors that influence the survival of yeast and mold. Be treated finally at a general level the environmental impact that production of feed and feeding gives origin to.

Compulsory components occur in e g group work, presentations, group discussions, projects and study visits.

In the course, the following general skills are trained: laboratory technique as well as presentation technique.

Formats and requirements for examination

Passed oral and written examination, passed project work as well as approved participation in compulsory components.
  • If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.
  • If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.
  • If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.

The course includes 3 credits in microbiology, 2.5 credits in feed science as well as 2 credits in cell biology. The course assumes good knowledge in the animals’ physiology as well as biochemistry.

Studenten ska kunna:

- förklara principerna för hur antinutritionella ämnen metaboliseras samt påverkar djurens ämnesomsättning,

- redogöra för grunderna inom omsättningen av kolhydrater, proteiner och lipider,
- beskriva mineralämnenas och vitaminernas roll och funktion i djurens ämnesomsättning,
- förklara principerna för djurens energiomsättning och vad som påverkar deras energibehov,

- redogöra för foderkonserveringsprinciper,
- diskutera mikroorganismers roll med avseende på toxinförekomst samt skörde- och lagringsmetoder,
- tolka resultat från mikrobiologiska analyser,

- redogöra för den huvudsakliga miljöpåverkan av produktion och konsumtion av fodermedel, samt värdera detta ur ett hållbarhetsperspektiv.
