Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
-account for the legislative process, the construction of the animal welfare legislation on a national and EU-level including decision making regarding different sets of regulations
-describe whereto and how a farmer, researcher, zoo-manager etc apply for the approvals needed in accordance with the animal welfare legislation
-account to how to develop new legislation and make alterations in the legislation from a scientific perspective
-describe the different sets of legislation are present within the animal welfare, and related areas, are available and describe their content
-account for what stakeholders have authority according to the animal welfare legislation
-search for scientific publications and legislative texts and, when writing, refer to these correctly

Content

The course deals with the animal welfare legislation and its applications. The course also focuses on other animal related legislation where knowledge is important, e.g. preventative health, feed and environmental legislation. Both Swedish and European legislation is covered. The course deals with the scientific basis for legislation, the legislative process, and the consequences of legislation for the animals in different contexts such as housing, handling, transport, competitions, breeding, experiments, slaughter and euthanasia. The course contains lectures, study visits, exercises, and base group work according to PBL (Problem Based Learning) as well as a group project.
Compulsory modules may be e.g. study visits, seminars, PBL-work etc.
The generic competences trained are: social interactions, oral and written communication, problem solving, analysis and argumentation techniques.

Formats and requirements for examination

Passed written and oral examination, passed participation in compulsory course modules.

• If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.
• If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.
• If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.
• For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline. For more information on this, please refer to the regulations for education at Bachelor's and Master's level.
