Objectives

After completing the course, the student shall be able to:

• describe central chemical concepts and relationships and solve chemical problems.

• describe the relationships between the units mass, amount of substance and molar mass and the relationship between the units concentration, amount of substance and volume, and the relation between these.

• make calculations of pH and pOH and relate these to the concentration of hydrogen ions.

• show a general understanding of biochemical processes in the plant cell that accounts for energy supply and energy consumption.

• at a general level account for different groups of molecules regarding structure, synthesis, metabolism and functions in the plant cell

• carry out basic laboratory methods in chemistry and biochemistry.

Content

The course includes basic knowledge and laboratory training in chemistry and biochemistry.

The course contains the following sections:

• atomic models, distribution structure of electrons and chemical bondings.

• redox reactions, balancing of chemical formulae and stoichiometry.

• acids and bases, the acid-base reaction, buffer, titration and the concepts of pH and pOH.

• the structure, nomenclature and functional groups of organic molecules

• theory of dominating biomolecules including amino acids, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and nucleic acids

• the energy supply of the plant cell

• the metabolism of lipids

• photosynthesis, carbon assimilation and carbon allocation.

• cell respiration

• the primary nitrogen and sulfur metabolism

• introduction to secondary metabolites

• introduction to methods for studying biomolecules

Scheduled laboratory sessions and presentations are compulsory.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

The examination consists of written examinations and written and oral presentations of laboratory work. To pass the course, approved examination, passed reports and participation in compulsory course components are required.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
• For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

Transitional provisions

• Exams: At least three retake sessions (renewed exams) will be offered within two years of the decision to discontinue the course. • Compulsory components: At least one opportunity for a retake session will be offered within two years of the decision to discontinue the course.

Other information

• The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
