The equivalent of 30 credits at advanced level in Agricultural Science or Horticultural Science, and English B.

Objectives

The student will gain an insight into research by working with a project in close association with a research group. The student will be able to train, in practice, how to apply some of the methods used by the research group in order to solve a specific problem. The student will also study the theory behind the methods in order to understand the limitations and possibilities of them.

On completion of the course, the student will:

• be able to apply and use some methods used in agricultural research

• understand the theoretical background of some methods used in agricultural research

• be able to present results in the form of a scientific paper

• have an insight in the research process and the work of a research group

Content

The course is based around an individual project. Prior to the course the student is asked to identify the research area or methods he/she is interested to learning more about. The student then contacts the course leader and a representative of a research group. At the beginning of the course, an individual project is identified by the student and a supervisor and a time plan is written. The student is introduced to laboratory or field site routines including the safety aspects. After a supervised introduction to the methods, more responsibility is given to the student. Literature studies in relation to the project and the chosen methods are included. The project concludes with the student writing a report, which must also be orally presented to the research group.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

The student has actively taken part in the work of a research group. The student writes a final report in English, in the form of a scientific report, including a discussion of the methods used and their limits and possibilities, and gives a seminar on the results in the project.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
• For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

Transitional provisions

• Exams: At least three retake sessions (renewed exams) will be offered within two years of the decision to discontinue the course. • Compulsory components: At least one opportunity for a retake session will be offered within two years of the decision to discontinue the course.

Other information

• The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.

• If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

Additional information

The course will broaden the student’s knowledge about research work and associated methods and/or may serve as a prestudy to a Master’s project.
