The equivalent of basic entry requirements for higher education studies and Biology 1 or Natural Sciences 2.Objectives
The course provides the participants with the knowledge to be able to advice in sheep production.
On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
plan, implement, analyse and evaluate different models of sheep production in terms of fixed biological, technical and business economics conditions
describe and explain the basics of sheep production, and
describe, explain and plan the use of sheep in landscape preservation.
Content
The course uses different forms of teaching, adjusted to distance learning, with three full days of lectures in Alnarp. There are lectures, seminars, written assignments and project work, as well as cooperation with the sheep production sector through business contacts and study visits. The course is provided as a half-time distance learning course, and is run accordingly to a fixed plan where each component is dealt with, treated and reported to the course management. A large project is included. Communication takes place mainly via the Internet.
The course deals with:
nutrition physiology and diet regime calculations (nutrient requirements, feeds, diets)
housing (buildings, internal fittings, feeding systems and fencing)
animal health (diseases, diagnostics and preventive measures)
rearing (feed management, grazing plans, breeding plans and production management)
economics (farm economics, breeding, markets, marketing, EU subsidies), and
landscape preservation (the part of sheep in landscape preservation, promotion of biodiversity, and environmental impact).
The course is divided into three sections which are examined separately. These three sections are:
Biology and production of sheep 3 credits,
Deepening assignment 2 credits,
Project work 2.5 credits.
In the project work, students will employ a holistic perspective to plan production on a sheep farm, including relations with the market. The course has three assemblies of which two are compulsory.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Written assignments, project work and written examination. Requirements for examination: pass grade in examination, assignment work, project work, plus active participation in compulsory components.
- If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
- The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
- If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
- For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
