Plant knowledge and vegetation ecology

The aim of the course is to give the student advanced knowledge of plants, vegetation and natural habitats and open up for new fields of knowledge within the subjects.
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
Identify a from a relevant basic range of wild and cultivated plants under different growing conditions and phase of life.
Understand and describe ecological relationships in natural habitats.
Demonstrate the ability to critically and analytically read thematic relevant literature.
Demonstrate the ability to orally present a work task account for a task orally.
Describe offered trade qualities for the plants in the basic range.
Content
In the course, plant material through lectures, teacher-supervised demonstrations and self-study are studied. Through literature studies, exercises, demonstrations and field trips, knowledge of field of use, climate hardiness, trade qualities and perceived values for the plant material in a selected basic range are developed. This mainly embraces conifers and woody plants during winter.
In the course, the natural habitats of horticultural plants are describe and analysed. Available tools are used to analysed and discussed natural biotopes ecology including ground and soil conditions. This takes place through field exercises, seminars, literature studies and lectures and is presented in a written work with a following oral presentation.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
To pass the course, it is required that the student has participated in compulsory course components and become passed in examination and presentation.
Compulsory components that are included in the course are:
Exercises
Seminar assignment
Written and oral presentation
Examination and evaluation
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
