Objectives
The intention of the course is to train the students to integrate complex, multi-disciplinary information for planning and management of sustainable development of the urban landscape.
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
– analyse Swedish urban centres with regard to the actors and processes within planning and management that are of strategic importance to sustainable development of the urban landscape
– apply various methods for information gathering prior to a process of change in the urban landscape, for example observations and various forms of interviews, such as focus group discussions or street walks
– reflect on methodological problems relating to various forms of information gathering
– relate Swedish conditions to international examples
– apply an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach in reflections on actual planning and management situations and express this in words and graphic images
– propose strategies for implementing one or more measures for sustainable development of the urban landscape in a specific context related to actual actors and processes.
Content
The course deals with development of the urban landscape from an actor perspective, based on both public and private interests, with the emphasis on managerial responsibility and planning procedures, and provides training in the ability to propose strategically motivated action options for sustainable development of the urban landscape. Case studies are used to provide training in the art of thinking in processes, working with ‘horizontal and vertical integration’ and dealing with conflicts of interest regarding land use in the development phase. It also deals with identification of values and important actors in various urban development projects. Different methods for information and opinion gathering are used to provide training in perspective viewing. The course contains short case studies in groups and a longer individual project, the outcome of which is proposals for planning and management strategies in a selected urban landscape. Examination takes the form of assessment of written reports, oral presentations (compulsory) and participation in seminars (compulsory). Approval of reports, presentations and seminar participation is required for a pass grade in the course. The requirements will be specified in the course programme by the start of the course.
