Statistics A - Basic Statistics

Objectives

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

- apply basic probability concepts and statistical principles and formulate a problem in statistical terms
- describe common statistical methods including conditions and assumptions
- select an appropriate statistical method for a given problem
- carry out a basic statistical analysis in the statistical software R
- interpret and evaluate results correctly and draw reasonable conclusions
- clearly and concisely communicate results and conclusions

The course constitutes two parts for which the following grading criteria will apply:

Part 1
Passed examination in written form.

  • To obtain grade 3, the student must attain 55% of the total number of credits on the examination.
  • To obtain grade 4, the student must attain 70% of the total number of credits on the examination.
  • To obtain grade 5, the student must attain 85% of the total number of credits on the examination.

Part 2
- Passed project report and passed oral presentation in the mandatory seminar. Discussions of other groups' reports can also be part of the examination. Reports, oral presentations, discussions and attendance at seminars are only graded with Pass (G) or Fail (U).

- Passed hand-in in R, graded Pass (G) or Fail (U)
