System and life cycle analysis

The course presents fundamental principles for problem solving with the aid of mathematical and systems analytical methods. Systems and models are central concepts, which will be discussed and applied to various environmental problems. Different types of models are presented and discussed in relation to when and how they are being used. The course also sketches how a plan for problem solving is devised and carried out.

A central part of the course consists of computer exercises in which the student will construct, simulate, and analyse different kinds of simpler models. Emphasis is also put on understanding the relation between system structure and behaviour. General techniques, such as model fitting, sensitivity analysis and optimisation are dealt with and practiced in the exercises.

Current issues relevant to the environment and sustainable development are reviewed and described from a system perspective. Various solutions are discussed as well as how the system / model can be influenced by different factors. The course also deals with energy analysis and quality aspects of energy. In addition, life cycle analysis (LCA) includes definition of purpose, system boundaries and functional unit, inventory (LCI), environmental impact assessment (LCIA), result interpretation and sensitivity analysis.

The course is conducted in the form of lectures, exercises, seminars and a project assignment on modeling where students will implement an LCA, including data collection, calculation of energy and environmental impact, as well as analysis of uncertainty and sensitivity.

Compulsory moments in the course are introduction to and presentation of the project assignment and seminars.
